2011 FAQ - Grants Initiative

How is the 2011 Grants Initiative different from NAIRTL’s previous grant initiatives?
- The application must be made by an existing network or community of practice
- The application must align with one of the specified thematic areas prioritised in the National strategy for Higher Education to 2030 (see application guidelines for details).

Who can apply for the 2011 Grants Initiative?
The application should be completed by one project leader who represents the community of practice/network. This person should have a contract of employment that lasts until at least September 2012 to facilitate reporting on the project. Applications from individuals will not be considered.

What is meant by a Community or Network of Practice?
These are existing groups or networks with common objectives who work across departments, disciplines, institutions etc. to address particular issues/problems that relate to teaching and learning in higher education.  Being able to answer questions 1 and 3 on the application will give a good indication of eligibility.

What can I purchase with the grant?
The grant can cover items such as recording equipment/ server space/ stationary/ web design/ training/ travel/ student hours. It is not possible to use the grant for any capital purchase, refurbishment, hiring of new staff, or rental of space.

What can I include as matched funding?
As per previous NAIRTL grant initiatives, the applicant needs to identify matching funding. Matching funding can comprise time spent on the project calculated as a percentage (pro rata) of salary, any additional monies to be spent on the project, overheads for up to 25% of the requested amount. Please note however that no amount of the actual awarded grant can be taken by the awardee's institution for overheads.
