Dr Niall Smith

Niall Smith has been the Head of Research at Cork Institute of Technology since 2006 with responsibility for the development and implementation of the Institute's Research Strategy. He has supervised 9 students and has published journal papers and book chapters in the area of high precision photometry, applied to astrophyiscs. He has also published translational research papers in air-quality monitoring and trace contaminant detection in pharma products using techniques developed within the astrophysics group. Dr. Smith is a founder member of Blackrock Castle Observatory, where his astrophysics research group are situated. The observatory houses an international award-winning science center which has the aim of educating young and old about the importance and benefits of science to our society. Since it opened in late 2007 it has received over 60,000 visitors.
